Design Development & Architectural Detailing
Focus: Constructing and specifying

Unit Brief:

An architectural/design project goes through various stages of transformation/development before the first brick is laid at site. The design process starts with the exploration of conceptual ideas, which evolve in to some kind of tangible form. In the later stages, after confronting the various challenges posed by functional, structural, constructional, and climatic requirements, the design reaches a level of resolution that can be called as the final design. ‘Design Development & Architectural Detailing’ studio is an attempt by the student to take this ‘final design’ to the stage of working drawing by evolving an architectural language. The process involves paying close attention to functional requirements, structural systems, building services, construction details, architectural elements and language.

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this studio unit:

  • Students will learn to create ‘Matrix of Ideas’(a process in which each influencing aspect of the project such as; structure, services, light, and climate, is addressed separately) in order to design an architectural object based on a strong logic rooted either in structural, services, or functional requirement (structuralism)
  • Students will know techniques of architectural detailing in order to evolve an architectural language based on functional requirements, construction technology, and climate.
  • Students will be able to make construction drawings and models in order to communicate the information to the team responsible for execution.

Exercise Schedule:

STAGE-1 (Design Project)

Exercise-1 (Case-Studies) (1 Week)

The objective of this exercise is to study the buildings done by various architects where either structure, light, or service play the main role in shaping the building.

Exercise-2 (Matrix of Ideas) (2 Week)

In this stage the student will try to address each aspect/layer of the project separately and derive at least three ideas under each aspect in the form of diagram/sketch. This will eventually generate a ‘Matrix/table’ of ideas relevant for the project as a class. In the next stage each student has to select three ideas from different categories with priorities and start superimposing one after the other.

Exercise-3 (Wall-Sections) (1 Week)

First attempt at making wall-sections of the project

At the end of Stage-2 (Design project) students will have a detailed design with some idea of materials and details.

STAGE-2 (Design Development)

Exercise-4 (Structural System) (1 Week)

Isolate components of the structural system of design by making drawings and models(physical, and digital). Resolve conflicts within the system and with other elements such as; services, and non-structural elements. Discuss with structural engineer. Give appropriate sizes to structural members based on thumb-rules.

Exercise-5 (Services) (1 Week)

Resolve various service-systems such as Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing through drawings, and digital model. Discuss with MEP consultant. Resolve conflicts with structural system.

Exercise-6 (Daylight Calculations & Climatic Analysis) (1 Week)

Simulate building performance with respect to daylight and thermal comfort with the help of ‘Sefaira’ software. Re-design fenestrations and wall-sections based on inputs from the software.

At the end of Stage-2 (Design development) students will have resolved all the aspects that shape the architectural form.

STAGE-3 (Architectural Detailing)

Exercise-7 (Whole-to-parts) (2 Week)

  • Create a material palette of all the external and internal finishes and incorporate the same in sketch-up model to arrive at a design language of the project.
  • Select a typical/important part of the design and enlarge at 1:20 scale. Make sectional models(physical and digital) showing all the layers of construction

Exercise-8 (Details through diagrams) (1Week)

Identify all the details from the selected part of the design. For each detail make a diagram which takes care of all the issues/forces acting on the detail. In the next stage apply the selected materials from the material palette to these diagrams in order to generate final details.

Exercise-9 (Interior details) (1 Week)

Select the interior elements from the identified part of the design and detail them.

Make electrical layout based on the required lux level for the given function, and select luminaire based on the same.

At the end of Stage-3 (Architectural Detailing) students will have an architectural project with the evolved architectural language that can be taken to the ‘Construction Drawings’ stage

STAGE-4 (Construction Drawings)
