An intensive course on research writing for students of architecture, design and planning. It addresses specific elements of research writing including abstract and keywords, literature review, citation and plagiarism, use of multiple sources and structure and editing. We will focus on how to express the results of your research and field work in writing, develop critical reading skills, and integrate sources to make more effective arguments. The sessions are conducted in workshop-mode involving presentations, writing exercises, peer reviews and one-on-one feedback sessions. It would be particularly useful for students in early stages of thesis-writing and research projects.

Brief outline of the Workshop

Class 1, 2 Dec, 2020: Introductions. Research Statement/Abstract. Identifying a topic

 

Class 2, 4 Dec, 2020: Testing your writing; critical reading of selected abstrac, 2020ts. Revising own abstract

 

Class 3, 9 Dec, 2020: Discussion on sources: range; how to use them in an original manner; ethics; visual sources

 

Class 4, 11 Dec, 2020: Exercises in critical reading of texts/secondary sources.

 

Class 5, 16 Dec, 2020: Exercises in critical reading of sources and applying them in your writing

 

Class 6, 18 Dec, 2020: Structure & synthesis of sources

Class 7, 23 Dec, 2020: Synthesizing sources & literature review

 

Class 8, 28 Dec, 2020: Summary, paraphrasing, quoting

 

Class 9, 30 Dec, 2020: Plagiarism and Citation

 

Class 10, 2 Jan, 2021: Bibliography, Editing, Final proposal

 

Class 11, 7 Jan, 2021: One-on-one feedback session. 30 min for each participant. 10 slots spread over the day.

 

Class 12, 8 Jan, 2021: One-on-one feedback session. 30 min for each participant. 10 slots spread over the day.

Tutor

Kanika Singh

Kanika Singh is Director, Centre for Writing & Communication, Ashoka University, Sonepat. She is a historian working on museums and heritage in contemporary India. She is also the founder of Delhi Heritage Walks. She taught at Ambedkar University Delhi, CEPT University Ahmedabad, IITTM, NOIDA and IGNOU.

Pre Requisites

Working fluency in English language. A Writing Sample of 1500 words to be submitted after registration
