This Workshop gives an advanced and detailed insight towards the Principles and Curriculum of Bauhaus developed during the timeline when the institute transitioned both its location and ideology under the leadership of its renowned masters such as Walter Gropius, Paul Klee, Vassily Kandinsky and László Moholy-Nagy. The workshop implies the curriculum and the lessons of these masters in today’s online teaching era with a annotated and detailed explanation about each master’s teachings. This workshop is a successor level consecutive to the foundation studio workshop but can also be taken independently.

04 Jan: 

Lecture– A brief history about Bauhaus; Principles and Curriculum followed with Brief Q&A
Lecture-Gropius’s Curriculum- 1919 Bauhaus Manifesto


05 Jan:

Lecture-Masters of Bauhaus| Apprentices of Bauhaus
Brief Q&A
Exercise– One work of each master and one analysis on each work
Group discussion




06 Jan:

Lecture – Introduction to Paul Klee And Vassily Kandinsky’s Exercise
Form– The Deal with the Geometry- Simple to Complex and finally to Analytical Drawing Followed with Q&A
Exercise– Individual take on the form(Geometry) Study: A brief presentation/ discussion


07 Jan: 

Color (Paul Klee)
Lecture – color theories of Bauhaus and a brief about the following.
Exercises – Light and Dark, In Motion, Equivalence and Equilibrium, Opacity and Transparency


08 Jan:

Matter and Materials (Joseph Albers/ Johannes Ittens) “Contact with Materials”
Lecture- On material studios of bauhaus and student works
Ittens’ Studio Exercise


09 Jan:

Lecture – Joseph Albers’ Studio work in bauhaus as well as student work Q&A
Exercises – Albers’ paper exercises Individual and group discussions



11 Jan:

Lecture– Introduction to Oskar Schlemmer’s work and its relation to Bauhaus’s Principles
Lecture– Esoteric Thought process in Bauhaus| Emergence of Masdaznan


12 Jan:

Exercise – Interpretation of human bodies in space: Understanding Anthropometry the Bauhaus’s way
Lecture – Life drawings from the students of Bauhaus


13 Jan:

From theatre to Drawing to space
Lecture – Oskar Schlemmer’s transition in his teachings: The Triadic Ballet


15 Jan:

Other Than Bauhaus: Contemporary schools and theories during the time of Bauhaus or later
Lecture on Vkhutemas A brief about Ulrich Konrad’s Theory and Manifestations of 20th Century.


16 Jan:

Conclusive Lecture – A brief Summary
Exercise – A collective approach on the all of the previously learnt bauhaus Principles and exercises (Group work or Individual)


Sneha Singh

Sneha Singh is an architect/ landscape architect who has also been an alumni of COOP design research, Hochschule Anhalt/Bauhaus, Dessau foundation. Currently she is pursuing her PhD research at Bauhaus University, Weimar Germany.
