This workshop intends to introduce Rhino and Grasshopper to participants who have little or no knowledge about the software. In the first few sessions, Rhinoceros will be introduced, which will include 3d modeling, 2d drafting, rendering, etc…Following this, we will start with grasshopper. We will see various components in grasshopper with a detailed understanding of data trees. In the last part of the workshop, we will use grasshopper for fabrication, where OpenNest plugin will be used, we will also create animations and do physics simulation using Kangaroo. Participants will learn to build catenary shells, tensile structures, and minimal surfaces. Algorithms like reaction-diffusion will be taught using kangaroo. At last, we will also learn how to create arrangements using terrain.party and create city maps with the help of elk.
Day 1
Introduction, Software setup, plugin installations
Day 2
Introduction to Rhino. What is numbs software? The layout of the software. 3D modelling and 2D drafting in Rhino. Preferences and setting up units. Various modes of modelling.
Day 3
Operations on a mesh, curves surfaces, Brep. Properties panel, Material assignment, and Rhino Render and Print options and layouts.
Day 4
Introduction to Grasshopper. What is a visual scripting? Importance of Visual Scripting. The layout of the grasshopper. A select object from grasshopper to Rhino. Bake an object. Operations on curves in a grasshopper.
Day 5-8
Explanation of various nodes in surface (analysis and construction), maths (this includes domains, matrixes operators, expressions, set), vectors (fields, grid, planes, and points) and meshes(analysis and construction tools). Explanation of various nodes used for object transformation and Display.
All this will be explained through scripts, where participants will script for façades, installations, furniture, and sculptures.
Day 9
Explanation of data structure in grasshopper. What us data tree, branches, and leaves. Where is it used and why is data matching one of the most important things in grasshopper?
Day 10
Implementation of Data structure with a script for generating panels for shell structure.
Day 11
Fabrication techniques using Rhino+Grasshopper and laser cutting.
We will learn various scripting techniques to unroll a surface, create contours, sections, etc. to create physical models of terrain and building.
Day 12
We will learn OpenNest, a plugin in grasshopper for arranging parts that need to be laser cut or CNC on the sheet.
Day 13
Creating animation. Using shaders. Participants will create a script of kinetic structure and export animations for the same.
Day 14
Introduction to physics simulation using Kangaroo. Creating catenary shells, tensile structure, and minimal surfaces.
Day 15
Intermediate use of Kangaroo. Packing algorithms and solid interactions.
Day 16
Advance use of Kangaroo. Solid interaction. Point reaction-diffusion algorithms.
Day 17
Creating terrain models using drone data or data from any GIS software.
Day 18
Creating a site with Rhino+Grasshopper. Create 2D and 3D cities with Elk and OpenStreetMap.Friday
