A Feminist Approach in Sustaining Kumbharwada’s Identity Amidst Vertical Development at Dharavi, Mumbai | Masters Design Thesis on Urban Housing

Site Context

Situated in Dharavi, the traditional home of the Kumbharwada community, the site chosen for the vertical pottery colony ensures continuity and close proximity to their pre-existing networks and markets. This project prioritizes the provision of suitable workspaces and equipment for potters, adequate living accommodations for potter families, and affordable rental options for migrants seeking housing within the community.

Engaging with stakeholders to advocate for this feminist approach is crucial, as it aims to balance the need for vertical urban growth with the preservation of social connections and cultural identity. By fostering vertical interactions and social exchanges, the design will support the unique culture of Kumbharwada, helping to protect it amidst urban redevelopment pressures. Prompt implementation will ensure that the needs of the increasing population are met while maintaining the community’s heritage and identity.

Design Process

The design process began with a functional and spatial analysis, mapping out activities in the Wadis like pottery making, washing clothes, and social gatherings. This analysis focused on understanding space utilisation and identifying multifunctional areas essential to the community’s culture.

In the concept development phase, the vertical integration concept was introduced to incorporate Wadi functions into a vertical framework, transforming open spaces into social hubs at different levels. Cultural preservation was prioritised, ensuring the design maintained spaces for traditional activities and social interactions.

Finally, during design prototyping, the vertical complex was zoned for specific functions, such as pottery workspaces, residential units, and communal areas. Vertical connections, including elevators, staircases, and ramps, were designed to encourage interaction and ease of movement throughout the complex. 

Final Outcome

A feminist approach to equity in Kumbharwada involves eschewing mass production in favor of artisanal craftsmanship, thereby preserving the community’s cultural integrity. This design prioritizes vertical interactions, fostering a close-knit community dynamic within an urbanized structure. By balancing the city’s need for vertical growth with the preservation of social connections and cultural identity, the design fosters a sustainable urban environment.

Vertical integration encourages connections and interactions at different levels, transforming traditional lanes, known as “Woman’s Wadi,” into social and activity hubs distributed throughout the building. This approach promotes a sense of community by creating spaces for social exchanges and communal activities at various vertical stages. Residents can engage in traditional practices while adapting to contemporary urban living.

Building with the community is integral to this approach. The people of Kumbharwada, who have historically built their own houses, will participate in the construction process. Under the guidance of an architect, they will create their own materials and design their own walls, ensuring that their unique cultural identity is reflected in the new structure.

Conclusion: This project showcases a thoughtful integration of vertical elements that ensures the Kumbharwada community can sustain its rich cultural legacy and livelihood while addressing the needs of an increasing population and modern urban challenges. It not only maintains the cultural heritage but also empowers the community to thrive amidst urban pressures.
