Adnan Makda is an architect and a visiting faculty at CEPT University, Ahmedabad. He has a special interest in combining technology with architecture. After completing his Bachelors in Architecture from CEPT University, Ahmedabad, he founded a startup known as ARKEYTEC that focuses on applying artificial intelligence to architecture. For his research, he is currently associated with Google AI. Adnan has done his internship from the Renzo Piano Building Workshop. He has won awards like Ultratech: Building for Billion and Kohler student awards.


This online workshop is for intermediate Rhino and grasshopper users, who want to dive into the world of genetic algorithms. We will start the workshop by introducing plugins like ladybug for climate analysis, mouse for finding human paths, wasps for clustering, lunchbox for paneling, and weaverbird for mesh editing. Following this Space Syntax and Magnetic floor plan will be used for automated floor plan generation. We will then introduce various algorithms in computational design and understand the theory of genetic algorithms, following which we will do two exercises using them in real-life scenarios.

    Troubleshooting problems in the set-up. Installing python and libraries to be used. Explanation of various kinds of optimizing algorithms. Importance of genetic algorithms.

  • Day 2 - JULY 13 (7:00 TO 9:00 PM IST)

    Single criteria problems and optimization using Galapagos.

  • Day 3 - JULY 14 (7:00 TO 9:00 PM IST)

    Multiple criteria optimization using Octopus/Wallacei in grasshopper. Setting up the environment, parameters, and evaluation criteria.

  • Day 4 - JULY 16 (7:00 TO 10:00 PM IST)

    Running optimizing algorithms to find out various overall best iteration and best iteration for various criteria.

  • Day 5 - JULY 17 (7:00 TO 10:00 PM IST)

    Solving advanced multiple criteria optimization problems. Tuning of criteria, in order of importance. Using an optimization algorithm to attain specific value by reducing mean square error.

  • Day 6 - JULY 19 (7:00 TO 9:00 PM IST)

    Introduction to Python. Numbers, Strings, Lists, Dictionaries, Tuples, Files, sets, booleans, if-else statements, for loop, while loop, and range.

  • Day 7 - JULY 20 (7:00 TO 9:00 PM IST)

    Introduction to Python. Method, functions, objects, and classes.

  • Day 8 - JULY 21 (7:00 TO 9:00 PM IST)

    Creating custom python components in Grasshopper using GH_CPython.

  • Day 9 - JULY 23 (7:00 TO 10:00 PM IST)

    Basic explanation of Revit. Understanding Rhino.Inside. Using Rhino.Inside to connect Rhino with Revit. Using Grasshopper with Revit.

  • Day 10 - JULY 24 (7:00 TO 10:00 PM IST)

    Making better decisions using data. Generate data using grasshopper and analyze it using the Seaborn library in Python.

  • Day 11 - JULY 26 (7:00 TO 9:00 PM IST)

    Exploring lunchbox machine learning library and optimization using machine learning.

  • Day 12 - JULY 27 (7:00 TO 9:00 PM IST)

    Exploring Rhino compute library with python.

  • Day 13 - JULY 28 (7:00 TO 9:00 PM IST)

    Various concepts in A.l and algorithms.

  • Day 14 - JULY 30 (7:00 TO 10:00 PM IST)

    A.l and Architecture. Various algorithms that can be applied to design. Case studies and projects.

  • Day 15 - JULY 31 (7:00 TO 10:00 PM IST)

    Conclusion session for the way forward.
