Project Description

(“Text as submitted by architect”)

When intervening in a roof, more specifically in the attic of a building dated 1906, in the middle of the 21st century, a dialogue is established between the different times and forms of inhabit, but also between the respective construction methods, being necessary to make them coexist harmoniously. Thus, in the genesis of the rehabilitation intervention for this 90 m2 apartment, in addition to counter the weak pre-existing conditions of habitability, efforts were also made to preserve the historical legacy of this constructive typology, preserving the elements considered as relevant to the characteristics of the time.

Examples of this are stonework, the sturdy wall made of irregular stone masonry, the wooden frameworks and pillars to support the roof, which are revealed and become the memory of the original construction system. A rigorous approach is defined, with a special focus on detail, choosing pine wood as the primary material, and valuing harmony and compatibility of the others. The spatial transformation of fire, initially very compartmentalized and with high ceilings reduced, appeared immediately and intuitively, and went on to make it a large space, removing advantage of the attic. Freeing the central area, a new functional organization is established, with a greater visual relationship between the different spaces. Its volumetry was increased, the depth of the fire was enhanced and the relation of the nascent / west visual axes and the natural lighting and ventilation through the spans in dormer. The new configuration of the space allows for a dynamic and flexible experience of home.

The closed kitchen space is canceled and a bench and dining room are defined in the space with higher ceiling height. The relocation of the sanitary installation to the interior of the fire allows the release of all gaps exteriors for ample space. This sanitary installation becomes the only interior space in the house, in which a light tunnel with skylight is introduced. This new interior and central volume stands out from the water. The bedroom, which is informal in character, is related to the other spaces in the house and now opens or encloses, through a scenic element – a golden velvet and silk curtain -, which runs in the brass wall extension.

The wallpaper coating introduces a rich chromatic hue, which spreads to the tile coverings on the old chimney, inside the bathroom and for the cladding in stone from the kitchen countertop. The pieces of furniture, the lamps, the rugs and the plants, have been carefully selected, extending the narrative reported through architecture.
