Akshat Bhatt

Akshat Bhatt is the Principal Architect at Architecture Discipline, a New Delhi-based multi-disciplinary design practice he founded in 2007. His work, spanning varied typologies from residential and retail interiors to large-scale public and commercial assignments and spread across the length and breadth of India, highlights the emergence of an architectural expression that is contemporary, yet rooted in a critical understanding of regionalism. Notable projects include a town hall and sales office for the Bhartiya City township in Bangalore, refurbishment projects for The Oberoi Group’s properties in Agra and Kolkata, and the JDH Urban Regeneration project, which aims to restore the historic Walled City of Jodhpur to its former glory. Bhatt represented India on the global front with the ‘Make in India’ Pavilion at Hannover Messe in 2015, which was adjudged the best Pavilion in the 65-year history of the Messe.

His work is published extensively and has won many accolades, including an NDTV DAA Architect of the Year Award, and citations from the Alliance Française and the Government of India. Most recently, Architecture Discipline presented their work at the London Design Biennale 2021, where three of their projects were part of ‘Design in an Age of Crisis’, a gallery of radical design ideas responding to the world’s most pressing issues.

Practice Ideology

Founded by Akshat Bhatt in 2007, Architecture Discipline is a multi-disciplinary architecture practice based in New Delhi, India. Its work, spanning varied typologies from residential and retail interiors to large-scale public and commercial assignments and spread across the length and breadth of India, highlights the emergence of an architectural expression that is contemporary, yet rooted in a critical understanding of regionalism. The outcome of every commission is determined by a series of design processes, from full scale mock-ups to long-term material investigations, which strive to develop programmatic & technical flexibility. As a result, all buildings are integrated—from conceptual framework to tactile experience.

The practice’s notable projects include Mana (Ranakpur), the Discovery Centre, a town hall and sales office for the Bhartiya City township in Bangalore, and the India Pavilion at Hannover Messe (Hanover) in 2015, which was adjudged the best Pavilion in the 65-year history of the Messe. The firm’s work has been critically acclaimed in India: multiple Indian Institute of Interior Designers (IIID) Awards, an NDTV DAA Architect of the Year Award (2013); citations from Alliance Francaise (2012), Architectural Digest India (2015), the National Gallery of Modern Art (2015); a felicitation by the Government of India (2015), the ID Honours award (2020) and the AD100 award for the 100 most influential Architects and Interior Designers in India (2020). Notable ongoing work includes refurbishment projects for The Oberoi Group’s properties in Agra and Kolkata, a series of new modular, urban hotels for the hospitality group; and JDH, an urban regeneration project that aims to restore the old, walled city of Jodhpur, India, to its former glory. Most recently, Architecture Discipline presented their work at the London Design Biennale 2021, where three of their projects were part of ‘Design in an Age of Crisis’, a gallery of radical design ideas responding to the world’s most pressing issues.
