Project Description

(“Text as submitted by the Architects”)

The pavilion is an attempt to create the possibility of using eco-friendly materials in the urban concrete jungle. As a natural material, Bamboo has its strength, which many people are not aware of. We can achieve so many organic structural forms using the tensile strength of Bamboo. This is also to prove that Bamboo has more potential than to be just scaffolding for the building construction. This design is not an innovation but an attempt to create something new in public urban projects using sustainable materials.

Organic form using a bamboo interlocking technique

Forms were derived from studying some case studies of bamboo works worldwide, and the final document was decided considering the design response to the site and the availability of budget. The design is entirely in sync with the existing stepped garden.

This will encourage more eco-friendly materials in an urban environment and bring awareness. This type of structure will support the local craftsman by providing them livelihood and help reduce construction waste from cities to some extent. On-site form development was challenging, but craftsmen played an equally important role and passionately achieved it.

The majority of works and design decisions were made on-site with collaborative efforts from the architect and craftsman. This project is a great success and is appreciated mainly by residents and government officials.

With the team of craftsmen and constant support from MCGM Assistant Commissioner Shri. Sharad Ughade sir and Er. Harshada, the architect, managed to complete this experiment successfully. Also, special thanks for guidance from Ar. Rohit Shinkre (Director Research & Design Cell Rachna Sansad).
