Motion Picture is a media which can pierce through various sections of the society and can reach to the widest possible audience. It is also one of the most important medium through which cultures and spaces can be documented. Urban spaces which are the canvases for people to express their cultural identities, their diversities and their aspirations are ever changing and have a huge impact in shaping up a society as well as future planning policies. Films can be of a great help in documenting a culture or highlighting issues faced by a city. In 1976, Late Architect and an Urbanist, Padma Vibhushan Charles Correa made a documentary called ‘City on water’. The film was about the city of Mumbai, it was about the life in Mumbai and the struggle of the city. The film became pivotal in the discussions around the issues which were arising in the mega city of Mumbai. It played a major role in the collective demand by the planners for the establishment of Navi Mumbai.
Urban spaces make the courtyards of any city, for expression of cultures, collective beliefs and dissent. There is a unique and inseparable relationship between a city and its inhabitants and the urban spaces that weave the two, together. We at Urbanarch Foundation believe that this beautiful and organic relationship needs to be explored from various perspectives. Cinema being a universal medium for expression and exploration for this competition, the CHALLENGE is to capture this interaction between a city and its people in a SHORT FILM (under 10minutes)
Shoot with your phone or with professional gadgets, it doesn’t matter As long as you boggle our minds with ‘a tale of a city.’
