About Call for Papers

Call for Book Chapters “CultPlay- The Culture & Development of Children’s Play” is aimed to provide an in-depth view of the culture of play in Mumbai. It also presents wide-ranging research on the spatial and sociological aspects of play.

Play is an integral element of childhood, both from the perspective of the act of play, and the playful nature and curiosity imbibe in children. Over time, wide-ranging research has established the powerful role of play in the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of children. Yet the most megacities, especially in an Indian context, offer very few play spaces, there are by neglecting the needs of their youngest citizens.

Under the pressure of increasing urbanization, tremendous socio-spatial inequalities, and densification, spaces of play for the children have always been very limited in Mumbai, India. Against this background, this book seeks to present the current status of the “Culture of Play” in the selected informal settlements in Mumbai, while also providing borders insights into the nature of the play and the city of Mumbai. This book seeks to establish how play spaces contribute to the development of children and their communities; identify the obstacles to building and maintaining playgrounds and; develop a design tool for the creation of sustainable play spaces for children under the age of 16.
