The Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne has been a major cultural event in France and Europe since 1998. Carried by the city of Saint-Étienne, the only French city designated as a “Creative City of Unesco Design”, and by the metropolis of Saint-Étienne, it welcomes designers, researchers, economic players, intellectuals, students, amateurs from all over the world. artistic and curious to question the practice of design and experiment with its methods.
From April 6 to July 31, 2022 , visitors discover objects, services and installations presented in seven exhibitions over nearly 4,000m2 and a free-access mediation trail.
“Bifurcations” is the theme of this 12th Saint-Étienne International Design Biennial .
Since March 2020, France has branched off in record time. The course of our lives has changed radically. The experience of restrictions and confinements, experienced simultaneously all over the world, is overwhelming. From this test, thinking about bifurcations becomes an issue that mobilizes the entire profession of designers and their allies to open an essential cultural debate at the heart of our techno-industrial society. Africa, a continent at the heart of contemporary ecological and political issues, is the guest of honor at this edition. Inspirational African practices are the subject of an exhibition.
Seven exhibitions show the challenges of design in major fields: domestic spaces, the automobile, the body, ways of learning, consumption and production methods.
What does design already do? What more can he do? How can he do otherwise?
This 12th Saint-Étienne International Design Biennial encourages design players to set off on an adventure, to take a step aside to explore new paths, here and now. She also invites the public to evaluate design as a potential tool for bifurcating.
The Cité du design and the Higher School of Art and Design of Saint-Étienne (Esadse) have designed a biennial for all audiences, insiders and those uninitiated in design, by considering situations of individual bifurcations, experiments collective, creative, agile and innovative acts.
Organized within the framework of the French presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne is part of both the 2030 Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
