Project Description

[Text as submitted by architect] The project is located south of Bogotá in the locality of Ciudad Bolívar, in the southeast corner of a residential block. The property destined for the project was originally a large green area with a good number of existing trees. In order to integrate and dispose of nature in the educational spaces, the Kindergarten is implanted in the space available between the trees, allowing a large green area with trees to surround the project on all internal fronts.

The project is an elongated volume of two levels oriented in the north-south direction, from which two single-level wings with habitable terraces connected to the central volume emerge perpendicularly. The main circulations are oriented towards an interior courtyard, and converge in a double-height centre, corresponding to the multiple dining room/classroom, which articulates the spaces and connects them to the access hall. The access and the small square are arranged in the south corner in response to the existing pedestrian flows.

The project presents a sober and solid language towards the outside, in accordance with the neighbourhood context that surrounds it. However, a grey concrete façade was chosen to establish a contrast with the existing urban landscape. A rhythm of deep yellow-coloured openings and a series of equally coloured cantilevered boxes gives the project its school identity and uniqueness. Towards the interior, transparency is privileged, allowing for a more direct communication with the courtyard and the existing trees.

In contrast to the traditional educational schemes of a row of closed classrooms and a side corridor, where pupils and teachers are forced to remain static in a space lacking in collective identity, the kindergarten is composed of open and flexible learning environments, in which each educational space is linked to the next in a continuous and fluid way. The mobility of doors and enclosures, and the transparency between spaces allows a changing, versatile and adaptable spatial organization to multiple pedagogical situations, promoting active and collaborative learning.

In accordance with the stages of school training: transition, pre-garden and garden, the program is organized in strips of three interrelated learning environments, the technical spaces and the school kitchen are located in relation to access to facilitate maintenance and supply. Circulations are extended to become spaces for social interaction between children and teachers, and assume an active pedagogical role as extension surfaces for school activities outside the learning environments. The union of these extension spaces with the learning environments forms an integrated and dynamic space.

As a new school infrastructure, the space is proposed according to a more active pedagogical approach where the child learns through different scales of social relationship. For this purpose, a group of devices and furniture is created on the scale of the children, located inside the learning environments and in the free areas of the Kindergarten, which serve as support for personal learning activities, small groups or communities.
