Practice Ideology

Meister Varma Architects was started in 2011 in the south Indian city of Kochi (Cochin) to focus on site specific, design led solutions for the residential and hospitality sector. Drawing on local architecture traditions and woodworking the practice strives to design climate responsive buildings for cities.

Any building activity by its very nature is  an act of encroachment on the environment. The impact

during construction and life cycle of the building should be consid ered beforehand. Thus, careful site planning, building placement and orientation form key aspects of the design approach. Passive ventilation, minimum or no dependence on air-conditioning, rainwater collection & storage are

integral part of the design, not afterthoughts. The se    lection of robust materials ensures that the building ages gracefully and extends generations beyond its current occupants.

Their projects have been recognized and published in various international digital and print media in

addition to being nominated for various awards. Sinc e 2013 the practice is also actively engaged in restoration of heritage buildings in partnership with German architect Karl Damschen.
