About the Book
Press Release, March 2018: The Next to Bauhaus yearbook from the Dessau School is the first edition of an annual documentation of teaching and research in the Department of Architecture, Facility Management and Geographic Information at the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. For the first time, the volume offers a comprehensive overview of the work of teachers and students on the Dessau campus and discusses which suggestions and recommendations for teaching today are exemplary. Published in the run-up to the 100th Bauhaus anniversary in 2019, this volume, like the future ones, is intended to convey an idea of the “New Bauhaus” with academic aspirations and a clear commitment to the great role model.
The Dessau School – Dessau School of Architecture is part of the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. With its campus, it is not only physically close to the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. Its orientation is also committed to the Bauhaus teachings and ideals: It pursues the updating of the Bauhaus ethics and aesthetics of construction and aims to translate these into a contemporary attitude. “Our topics are no longer those that were on the agenda when the Bauhaus moved to Dessau. (…) Other questions arise. How sustainable is our building? How is it compatible with the environment that we have already changed so sustainably that we are already talking about an Anthropocene? And how do we gain more from architecture under these conditions than fulfilling the requirements for environmental compatibility? Jasper Cepl asks in his introductory essay. In this he formulates the tasks of today’s architectural theory in general, and in particular the responsibility of the teachers for the personal and creative development of the approximately 1,000 prospective architects from all over the world who study at the Dessau school.
