Jerome Buttrick
Jerome has led Buttrick Projects Architecture+Design since 1994. His professional life before that was spent working with architecture firms in Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, after beginning his career with the firm of Buttrick White & Burtis, in New York.
Growing up in New York City and spending summers in rural Long Island, Jerome was influenced by the contrast between the formality and grandeur of Manhattan architecture and the rustic vernacular structures that surrounded the farms he loved working on from a young age. In his current work, he is motivated by the interplay of space and material and by the desire to create beautiful juxtapositions while creating compelling architectural narratives. “That is what brings us into the office each day. How things fit together is endlessly fascinating.”
As managing principal, Jerome has always seen to it that each BPA+D project balances innovations with best practices. Jerome and his team typically lead projects from start to finish—from concept and approvals, through construction, to details and furniture. To respond to the reality of climate change, the firm contributes a portion of its gross proceeds annually to support environmental causes through 1% for the Planet.
When not at work, Jerome might be found body surfing, hiking, or spey casting, a recent fixation. He has a growing guitar collection (mostly acoustic), and he tries to carve out a few minutes here and there to play. He lives in Oakland with his wife, MD Buttrick, with whom he has two young adult children.

BUTTRICK PROJECTS ARCHITECTURE+DESIGN is a practice that creates thoughtful, elegant buildings, interiors and hardscapes crafted to the specific vision and programmatic needs of each client and project site. Informed through attentive listening and observation, our projects unfold from myriad influences, with value, integrity, and proportion always in mind. Working on brand-new as well as older historic projects, mostly in the Bay Area, we are familiar with traditional and contemporary styles and techniques. We design responsibly, creating integrated, energy-efficient, healthy, lasting spaces. Our services include conceptual design, approvals, construction details, specifications as well as interiors and hardscape design.
