Vikram Chevli

Vikram’s vision when he founded Chevli Architects was to combine his international experience with his passion for innovative and sustainable design. He works closely with clients and the context to ensure that the essence of a place is fully captured in his work.

Growing up in Surat, India, he completed his undergraduate degree at the School of Architecture, CEPT, Ahmedabad, and Bezalel Academy of Arts, Jerusalem. He then studied for his postgraduate degree at the University of New Mexico in 2003, followed by a year of traveling and working in the USA. In India, he worked for Matharoo Associates as a Site Architect for three years while designing a few residential projects of his own.

In 2008, Vikram moved to Australia, working for different firms before joining Stewart Architects in 2011, where he worked for seven years as a Senior Associate. In 2018, he started a new role as Design Director at Front Architects in Canberra, delivering mixed-use developments and driving them from the concept stage to the handover. In 2021, he decided to start Chevli Architects to connect his home city, Surat, with Canberra, the city he now resides in.

Practice Ideology

To us, architecture is about creating ‘places’ that respond to its physical, cultural, and climatic context. With a focus on experiential design, we create meaningful and memorable spaces through the sensitive use of materials, finishes, and natural light.

‘A great building must begin with the unmeasurable, must go through measurable means when it is being designed and, in the end, must be unmeasurable’ – Louis Kahn.

We are a curious and inquisitive team, striving to better ourselves through each project and each passing day. For us, size, location, and budget are not a concern – we see each project’s unique challenges as a possibility to deliver the best outcome for our clients.

Being a part of projects in different locations has been the biggest opportunity for us and our journey. So, for now, we think it’s time to connect the dots.
