Chun Hooi TAN

Chun Hooi Tan holds a MSc in Computer Aided Building Design and a BSc in Architecture from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and Queen’s University of Belfast, UK, with a field of expertise in architectural and spatial design, a field that focuses on the relationship between architecture, design, and mankind, with creativity as a point of departure.

As a specialist in spatial design, Chun Hooi has explored deeply into spatial organisation and all its human implications. He holds strongly that the more rapidly organisations, patterns of living, and local traditions are disrupted, the more awareness is needed. Chun Hooi investigated the mutual relations between physical and social spaces, including spatial organisation, interior design, and microarchitecture. His design works are always on a human scale that relate to subjects of relevance to society and its social, cultural, and environmental issues.

Practice Ideology

Core Design Workshop is a multi-disciplinary design practice based in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. The design studio was founded by design architect Chun Hooi TAN in 2009. With experiences in new build, remodelling design, and adaptive reuse architecture, Core Design Workshop has been emphasising looking deep into the iNSIDE of architecture, not in the context of interior design but simply representing architecture from the iNSIDE out. Putting Form and Function as the old norm, prioritising on defining the spatial quality within the context of architecture, with creating NEW spatial experiences as the top agenda of all the design programs, re-discovering the inner essence of what truly matters to the building users.
