Practice Ideology
Daffonchio Architects was founded by Enrico Daffonchio, an Italian Architect, in 1996. The firm is based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is active in Africa and Europe.
Our projects range from product design to entire precinct developments; from luxury homes to sustainable housing in Africa’s booming cities.
The firm’s architectural approach is strongly rooted in Daffonchio’s formative years in northern Italy, where classical architecture coexists with Italian rationalism, and a chemistry of tradition and innovation shapes all aspects of design.
The firm’s work is enriched though extensive travelling, a growing need for, and interest in, sustainable design, and collaborations with contemporary artists. More recently, open source approach and parametric design are giving a powerful new direction to the firm’s work.
We are at the forefront of sustainable architecture in Africa. One of our recent projects, 78 Corlett Drive, was the first Office Development in Africa to be awarded a Green Star v1.1 6 Star Rating in 2018, and also received Green Star Net Zero Carbon accreditation.
The medium scale of the firm ensures that each project is given the personal attention of a highly qualified and experienced Architect from inception to completion, whilst maintaining the capacity required to handle any scale of project.
The firm’s recent move to The Conservatory on Baker Street, a newly regenerated green building, is in keeping with its approach to promoting a more sustainable, multi-functional urban environment. Situated within walking distance of the vibrant collective that is Keyes Art Mile, it is a comfortable fit as the new home of like-minded creative individuals.
Daffonchio established offices in Cape Town and Milan in 2014. The Cape Town office is in De Waterkant and focuses on projects in Cape Town and the surrounding areas. The Milan office is in the Tortona area.
