Hulett Jones (Principal Architect)

Hulett combines his passion for art, music, and mathematics in his architectural career, bringing an acute design sensibility and deep technical expertise to his work. Prior to founding Jones | Haydu, Hulett worked as a lead project architect and senior designer on major community, academic, commercial, renovation, and historic restoration projects for an internationally acclaimed firm. The bulk of all of these projects have been program rich environments with highly specific uses.

Hulett’s father was an artist and industrial designer, his mother an educator, and his grandfather an engineer. From an early age, he remembers learning to draw from his father, sitting under his grandfather’s drafting table, and learning from his mother’s Socratic dialogue method of teaching. This Socratic method drives his design process through questioning and discovery. Hulett holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin. He has served as an adjunct professor, teaching at California Polytechnic State University (SLO), the California College of the Arts, and the Academy of Art University. Hulett is a registered architect in California, Texas, and Florida.

Paul Haydu (Principal Architect)

With a deep interest in the literary and visual arts, Paul brings a keen ear to the design process and seeks to infuse the solution with both pragmatic and narrative qualities. Prior to founding Jones | Haydu, Paul worked as a senior designer and project manager on a range of residential, commercial, and academic projects for a small, award-winning firm. This experience focused on inventive, highly detailed, and personalised solutions, comprising in-depth research and open discourse.

Paul’s father was a chemist, his mother a professor of literature, and his aunt a painter. The lively and varied discussions and experiences born of this environment instilled a sense of artistic curiosity tempered by scientific logic early on. A music lover, avid cook, intermittent author, ally of the outdoors, and aspiring world traveller, Paul seeks the breadth and depth of dialogue, interaction, and discovery. Paul holds a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University and a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin. He has served as an adjunct professor, teaching at California Polytechnic State University (SLO) and the Academy of Art University. Paul is a registered architect in California.

Practice Ideology

At Jones | Haydu, the designers believe each project is an opportunity to not just meld the pragmatic requirements and aesthetic desires, but to allow for rich connection, discovery, and wonder. Jones | Haydu is a design-driven, thoughtful firm with a demonstrated interest in innovative solutions, attention to craft and detail, and a desire to enrich each project with its own distinct narrative.

Their philosophy is centered on the specificity of each design problem and solution. They foster ideas and concepts informed by the unique nature of the client, the site, and the program. In so doing, they strive to unify aesthetic invention, functional sensibility, social and environmental responsibility, and economic reality. Rather than imposing a unified style upon the user and circumstance, they seek inspiration from them. At the core of this philosophy is the goal of having architecture enhance one’s experience.
