Excerpt: AR Studio, designed by Apical Reform Studio, is a studio that derives an architectural form that seamlessly merges two diversely functioning entities. It speaks of and adheres to our design sensibilities and evolves with us through the years. The designers had been playing with the idea of a fabric-like envelope for the core form. What was conceived, was abstracted through neat lines and clean details to reach a result that accentuates the beauty of the form and provides partial shade to the spaces inside.
[Text as submitted by architect] Ten years ago we started with a modest establishment and within a relatively short period of time, we grew organically. As was soon evident we needed more space in our studio to accommodate the growing ambit. Ergo, we decided to build one for ourselves: a studio that speaks of and adheres to our design sensibilities and evolves with us through the years to come.
The new two storeyed structure had been under development for the better part of 2015. The ground floor holds a globally present children’s fitness center while the AR studio is housed across the entire first floor. However, both spaces boast of separate entrances, split under a shaded drop off area, courtesy, a bridge at upper level which in turn binds the sprawling architectural form as one entity.
The project posed an interesting challenge initially : to derive an architectural form which seamlessly merges two diversely functioning entities. The functions of the structure dictated that large clear volumes allowing in plenty of natural light throughout the running hours of the day be conceived, thus anchoring the vertical scale of the building form. We had been playing with the idea of a fabric-like envelope for the core form. What was conceived, was abstracted through neat lines and clean details to reach a result that accentuates the beauty of the form and provides partial shade to the spaces inside. The arrangement of the louver-like skin, with the changing angles, allows for optimal perception of the outdoor spaces from inside. To add to the minimalist embellishments, the skin, as it moves along the building surface, splits to reveal a glass wall on the ground floor, merging again towards the end.
While moving through the central vehicular pathway that runs across the plaza and along the building length, one experiences the transformation of the uniquely shaped louvers, mildly revealing the space between each one of them. Thus, visually connecting the outside to the interior spaces.
