[Text as submitted by architect] Nestled within the serene peri-urban landscape of Theni, Tamil Nadu, Bridge Bungalow was designed on a classic 30’x50’ west-facing plot. In response to the client’s discerning taste for simplicity with an eye towards future expansion, the design ethos at SpaceDNA—short for Space Daylight Nature and Architecture—sought to encapsulate the quintessence of good design: volumetric balance, optimal daylight infusion, natural ventilation, and lush greenery seamlessly interwoven into the architectural DNA.

The front façade of Bridge Bungalow is a study in understated simplicity, meticulously crafted to maximize natural light and harness the gentle caress of the prevailing southwest wind. Angular planes on the southwest corner invite the breeze into the heart of the home, fostering a sense of harmony between indoors and outdoors.

Inside, an open-plan layout beckons, inviting uninterrupted airflow and visual connectivity throughout. The ground floor plays host to essential living spaces, including a parking area, living room, kitchen, dining area, and two bedrooms with attached toilets. A narrow green court extends from the living room, adorned with patterned tiles and illuminated by strategically placed skylights that not only bathe the space in sunlight but also facilitate passive cooling through the stack effect.

Ascending to the mezzanine floor, one is greeted by a seamless blend of functionality and aesthetics. Here, a casual living area unfolds, seamlessly merging with an open terrace to create an expansive venue for gatherings and celebrations. French windows blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, inviting nature to become an integral part of everyday life.

A steel bridge suspended in the double-height space serves as both a practical passageway and a striking architectural feature, lending the home its distinctive moniker.

The first floor of Bridge Bungalow offers respite and tranquility, boasting a bedroom with an attached toilet, balcony, terrace, and space for integrated future expansion.

A cantilevered workstation graces the first-floor bedroom, offering a secluded yet connected space that overlooks the verdant garden and bustling living area below. This ensures seamless integration with the surrounding environment, allowing occupants to remain engaged with their surroundings while pursuing their tasks.

Throughout Bridge Bungalow, a restrained color palette of black, white, and wood is enlivened by accents of turquoise, infusing each space with a sense of vibrancy and warmth. In this project, SpaceDNA has tried not only to create a dwelling but a sanctuary—a place where form and function converge to create a timeless retreat for generations to come.
