The site was a former dumping ground for industrial waste
The sites facing the south west posed huge challenges in terms of glare and heat gain from the setting sun.
The industrial suburb also has lot of suspended particulate matter in the air .
The rather tight site for a larger design requirement made it very challenging to provide space for landscape.
Brief given by client:
The client brief was to integrate a mixed use building consisting of two functional parts i.e. 10,000 sq. ft. single level warehouse which left us with a south west facing 60feet x 98 feet footprint after leaving the requisite setbacks.
The clients being a leading concrete equipment manufacturer wanted their office to be reflective of their ethos to being eco conscious and the use of concrete as an aesthetic architectural material. By that the building had to become a branding for their company.
The clients, being highly environment conscious also wanted the building be minimally air-conditioned and follow sound climatic principles.
We divided the requirements into two categories, work spaces and interaction spaces and design formed two blocks with the respective type of spaces interspersed by a central courtyard that forms a connection between the two types of spaces. This strategy also works as it divides the floor plates into smaller parts thereby making more functional areas directed towards natural light and ventilation. The courtyard goes right down to the basement floor making sure that the basement is well lit and ventilated. A water channel connects the ground level double height entrance foyer with the basement courtyard creating drawing inspiration from the water channels from Hampi. The water feature acts as a natural humidifier and aids in passive cooling.
The use of concrete as a primary building material is expressed both in structure and the façade creation. The cantilevered south west façade are mutually shading and thereby reducing the heat gain.
The brutalist honed concrete form makes a bold statement about the clients passion for innovation in the field of concrete technology.
