Excerpt: Kallbadaren is an installation designed by AndrénFogelström in Sweden. The architecture is robust and elegant with its well thought details. The arcade of the well-wrought wooden façade mirrors the surface of lake Mälaren and offers protected niches in all directions – giving protection from the wind and creating warm spots from early spring to late autumn.

Project Description

[Text as submitted by architect] Kallbadaden is Stockholms’ new open-air bath and meeting point. The building words in summer as well as in winter and is organized to cater to the both the die-hard cold swimmers as well as city strollers and tourists. The bath has a clear organization separating the public café and bathing jetties from the secluded swimming pools and saunas. Each of the saunas are placed to have the best possible view over the city, and the large communal sauna offers a great panoramic view over the lake and Östbergs town hall.

The architecture is robust and elegant with its well thought details. The arcade of the well-wrought wooden façade mirrors the surface of lake Mälaren and offers protected niches in all directions – giving protection from the wind and creating warm spots from early spring to late autumn. In the arcade there is room to enjoy the view after the sauna, from here there are bathing stairs down into Riddarfjärden which enables a spontaneous dip and offers an alternative to the privacy-protected pools. Around the communal central pool there are outdoor showers, sun loungers and space for sunbathing. In summer, the entire roof is transformed into a public sun deck with a kiosk, jumping tower and space for concerts and yoga – Stockholm’s new living room at Riddarfjärden.

Already on Södermälarstrand, visitors are welcomed to the Bathing Palace with a kiosk and public seating areas. The jetty towards the building is designed as a public bath with bathing jetties to the west and the afternoon sun. The bathing palace is the obvious meeting place on Riddarfjärden that the city has lacked for so long.
