Excerpt: Kavani – The Bridal Abode, an adaptive reuse project by PRAJC Design Consultants LLP, revives a 50-year-old house and converts it into a retail shop, reflecting the brand’s traditional roots and the local history. The designers aimed to blend tradition and modernity in the space, using colors, textures, exclusive furniture design, and a unique brand language while maintaining its main structure.
Project Description
[Text as submitted by architect] Client brief: The client wanted to revive their 50-year-old house and convert it into a retail shop that reflected the traditional roots of the brand and the history of the place. In a 15-cent site, the old residence stands as an epitome of time. Within the client’s need to revitalize the space and other intent to retain the identity of the house, the design became an archetype of adaptive reuse in the heart of Kottayam.
Concept note: The concept revolved around the designers’ inspiration to reflect the longstanding stories of the place. While retaining the house’s main structure, they hoped to bring a contemporary outlook of today to the interiors. In the linkage that balances tradition and modernity in a 1000 sq. ft. space, they played with colors, textures, exclusive furniture design, and a language unique to the brand.
Design Process: The design process originated from the site itself. The primary aim was to understand the structure and personify the stories of time that it may have withstood. Within the perspectives of conservation and preservation, the designers indulged in a thorough study of how to incorporate the modern clients in a rather old structure. In the subtle earthy tones of the old residence, they played with a pop of colors and custom fixtures in metal finish.
Nice work!!
