About the Author

S.M. Akhtar

Dr. S. M. Akhtar is a man of multi-disciplinary background, his scope of studies spans over Architecture, Town Planning, Social Sciences, and the Environment. He is a graduate of The Indian Institute of Architect, a postgraduate of the Institute of Town Planners India, with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration covering Urban & Rural Environment Management, Sociology, and Economics and Bachelor’s degree in Law, and Ph.D. on Urban Housing. He is the first recipient of D.Litt. in Public Administration as well the first architect and planner honored with a D.Litt. degree.

He is currently Professor & Founder Dean of the Faculty of Architecture & Ekistics at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. By initiating B.Arch. (SFS) besides B.Arch., he introduced a second shift in teaching with the aim to optimize national resource utilization; he succeeded in bridging the industry–institution gap. He developed six Master’s degree programs namely, M. Ekistics, M. Arch–Architecture Pedagogy, M. Arch–Building Services, M. Arch–Medical Architecture, M. Arch–Recreation Architecture, and M. Arch–Urban Regeneration, all of which are unique. Also under his supervision, the Ph.D. program in Architecture & Planning has been introduced and five Ph.D. theses have been awarded. He has previously authored books entitled “Urban Housing – Issues & Strategies” and “Islamic Architecture – At Crossroad”.
