About Competition
December 16, 2021. Super typhoon Rai made landfall in the Philippines. The storm was unexpectedly powerful, comparable to a category five hurricane when it hit, it collapsed buildings and power lines, uprooted palm trees, and worse. It is estimated that around 90 to 95% of the island structures (mostly homes) were damaged.
It’s been four months since typhoon Rai wiped out most of the island and unfortunately rehabilitation has been painfully slow. It is thanks to local organizations such as the NGO Local Lab that they are mobilizing different groups and rebuilding the island as fast as they can.
Their goal is to build the island back and to do it stronger. For that, this competition will study how architecture can help in a post-disaster recovery through two projects:
Project #1 will focus on the construction of a new community center and local market in the town of Burgos, after their previous one got destroyed.
Project #2 will look for the regeneration of towns through small urban-rural design interventions.
Any architecture student or professional architect can participate in REBUILDING SIARGAO, regardless of their nationality.
