The Kurgi Observation Tower competition sought out designs for an observation tower for Kurgi farm, one of the last remaining Latvian Ardennes breeding programs. The tower would hopefully attract more visitors and help raise awareness and gain appreciation for both the horses and the beautiful, rugged Baltic landscape.
The winning entries were selected for their responsiveness to the project brief as well as the quality of design, and architectural innovation that boasts a strong display of experimentation for fully-realizable projects.
First prize was awarded to Daniel Norell, Einar Rodhe and Agnes Mührer from Norell/Rodhe architectural firm in Sweden. Their “Tower of Many Views” is a vertical gridded framework with a system of architectural ‘plug-ins’ that cantilever from a central core – each of these frames a specific view to the site and surrounding Biosphere Reserve.
Second prize winner and ‘Client Favorite’ award-winner was Arseniy Rabotnov from Russia, whose “Spiral Tower” project was defined by a series of twisting and ample triangular viewing platforms set on a structure of rounded steel extrusions.
Third prize winners Yuteng Lin and JJ Zhao from Canada designed a staggered set of platforms that rotated at varying angles to focus on distinct scenic points.
