This workshop offers a more advanced understanding of Computational Design tools such Revit and Python. This fifteen day workshop aims at data driven design processes and its decision making. 

Brief outline of the Workshop

Day 1

Troubleshooting problems in the set-up. Installing python and libraries to be used. Explanation of various kinds of optimizing algorithms. Importance of genetic algorithms.


Day 2 

Single criteria problems and optimization using Galapagos.


Day 3

Multiple criteria optimization using Octopus/Wallacei in grasshopper. Setting up the environment, parameters, and evaluation criteria.


Day 4

Running optimizing algorithms to find out various overall best iteration and best iteration for various criteria.


Day 5

Solving advanced multiple criteria optimization problems. Tuning of criteria, in order of importance. Using an optimization algorithm to attain specific value by reducing mean square error.


Day 6

Introduction to Python. Numbers, Strings, Lists, Dictionaries, Tuples, Files, sets, booleans, if-else statements, for loop, while loop, and range.


Day 7

Introduction to Python. Method, functions, objects, and classes.


Day 8

Creating custom python components in Grasshopper using GH_CPython.


Day 9

Basic explanation of Revit. Understanding Rhino.Inside. Using Rhino.Inside to connect Rhino with Revit. Using Grasshopper with Revit.


Day 10 

Making better decisions using data. Generate data using grasshopper and analyze it using the Seaborn library in Python.


Day 11 

Exploring lunchbox machine learning library and optimization using machine learning.


Day 12

Exploring Rhino compute library with python.


Day 13

Various concepts in A.I and algorithms.


Day 14

A.I and Architecture. Various algorithms that can be applied to design. Case studies and projects.


Adnan Makda

Adnan has completed Architecture from CEPT University. He has a special interest in combining technology with architecture. He is currently running a startup-up known as ARKEYTEC that focuses on applying artificial intelligence to architecture. For his research, he is currently associated with Google AI.


Adnan has done his internship from the Renzo Piano Building Workshop. He has won awards like Ultractech: Building for Billion and Kohler student awards.


Architecture and Interior Design Students & Professionals


Should have an elementary understanding of visual scripting, preferably Grasshopper.

Form of final output

The aim of this course is to teach participants Computational design tools. Hence participants will not be given any major design assignment.
