The American Institute of Architects, San Francisco (AIASF), in collaboration with the Center for Architecture + Design and AIASF’s Housing Committee, is pleased to present its annual symposium Housing+ | Future Typologies for a Livable and Equitable San Francisco on Thursday, June 16, and Friday, June 17 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
Now in its 7th year, AIASF’s housing symposium continues the urgent need for conversations among architects, businesses, and government representatives, who convene to examine ways that they can ensure more livable and equitable housing opportunities for the city’s vibrant communities. The two-day virtual Housing+ program aims to address San Francisco’s growing population and takes a deep dive into The California H.O.M.E. Act (SB9), the result of a multi-year effort to develop solutions to address the state’s housing crisis.
Keynote speakers include Frances Anderton, Author and former Host of KCRW/DnA Podcast, and Senator Scott Weiner, a member of the California State Senate, representing District 11, which includes San Francisco and parts of San Mateo County.
Additional speakers for day one of Housing+ include Todd David, Executive Director of the Housing Action Coalition, Rich Hillis, Planning Director at the San Francisco Planning Department, and Tamara Knox, CEO/Co-Founder of Frolic. Day two of Housing+ introduces a panel of architects including Christopher Roach, AIA, MAUD, LEED AP, co-founder and principal of Studio VARA, Lise de Vito, Design Industry Relations and Strategy, Henrybuilt and Owner of Zack | de Vito Architecture + Construction, Mark Macy, AIA, LEED AP, Founding Principal of Macy Architecture, Leah Martin, Architect/Partner at Allied8, and Brian Phillips, FAIA, Founding Principal/Creative Director at ISA. “There is enormous demand for housing in our city,” says Paul Adamson, AIASF’s 2022 President and Chair of AIASF’s Housing Committee, “and as a multi-faceted problem, we need to tackle it from many angles–policy, advocacy, community engagement, business models, land-use strategies, innovative design, typological variants, and construction,” he continues. “The 2022 Housing+ Symposium, and all its companion programs, aim to explore the problem holistically and, in turn, collaborate within different means to find new solutions that address all these critical factors,” he says.
The 2022 Housing+ Symposium is the first part of a multi-pronged housing initiative by AIA San Francisco that will offer various companion programs addressing the housing crisis including curated podcast episodes in collaboration with the Design Voice Podcast and AIASF’s bi-annual publication titled Small Firms, Great Projects, whose 2022 issue will focus on individuals and firms specializing in residential design. Additional initiatives for Housing+ will be announced later this year.

Center for Architecture + Design
The Center for Architecture + Design (the Center) is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to creating a public-focused dialogue on architecture, design, and the built environment in the San Francisco Bay Area. Established in 2005 by the San Francisco Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the Center enhances public appreciation for architecture and design through virtual and in-person exhibitions, lectures, tours, film series, and other programs, including the annual Architecture + the City festival. The Center’s new home, designed by a “Community of Builders,” spearheaded by Aidlin Darling Design, BCCI, and Salter, will be located on the street level space of the historic Hallidie Building. The Center will inform, educate, and inspire innovative ideas about architecture and design in the Bay Area.
Housing + and the AIA San Francisco Housing Committee
Housing+ is an annual symposium that addresses a variety of housing issues in the San Francisco Bay Area with constituents beyond city limits. Already in its seventh year, Housing+ is in collaboration with AIASF’s Housing Committee, which engages and educates members and the community through discussion, events, and informal sharing of expertise. The Committee’s primary focus is affordable housing, but welcomes discussion of issues relevant to housing for those of all income levels.
