The Art of Sport | Design Pendulum

The program brings together an interesting mix of facilities which includes the Art of sport – a sports training facility for young girls between ages 5-11, Family Tree – a child psychotherapy center and a community kitchen-dining space. The project is housed in a typical urban residential development on a 500 sq yd plot in South Delhi, located opposite the Deer Park on a busy main road. The Art of Sport, which is located at the basement level, is designed as the indoor sports training space fitted with sports flooring, equipment and a fresh air system.

AMRA7 Apartment | Bruno Rossi Arquitetos + Piratininga Arquitetos Associados

A large mashrabiya – featuring windows with wooden trusses, an Iberian heritage typical of Brazilian architecture, draws your attention on Alameda Ministro Rocha Azevedo, near Avenida Paulista in São Paulo. It is a residential building designed in 1964 by the architects Alberto Botti and Marc Rubin, both partners at Botti & Rubin Associated Architects. The comprehensive approach by Bruno Rossi Arquitetos + Piratininga Arquitetos Associados enhanced the high quality of the original project. Their remodelling design valued the modern architecture and structural beauty of the building, based on its rigorous attention to detail, providing new openings for natural light and views, and better circulation.

RG House | Michel Macedo Arquitetos

Conditioned by an environmentally protected area on the backyard, the RG house diverges into two distinct priority facts, one environmental and another human: the uneven topography, characteristic of the city, and the contemplative value that the preserved vegetation offers to the residents on the most private limit of the lot.

The beach house of Prumirim is located in the northern coast of the São Paulo state – Brazil, it is laid out among the thick Atlantic woods of the Sao Paulo shoreline, a few meters from the sea. The project intended the house to be a vacation retreat for the couple and their 3 children as well as the main home for the couple to enjoy retirement among the natural landscape.

Pirouette House| Wallmakers

Located smack in the middle of an urban and crowded locale of Trivandrum, the site was a small plot that was being suffocated by other residential projects from all four sides. The idea of this residence was to have an inward facing house with all its spaces opening into a funneling central courtyard. The house is aligned in the East-West direction with openings facilitating for maximum cross-ventilation.

JK House | Michel Macedo Arquitetos

Composed by two fundamental aspects: structural design and nature, JK house merges building elements into a beautiful valley landscape in Paraná state – Brazil, interrelating the geographical aspect and the local topography. Implemented as a stone inserted into the landscape, the raised ground floor on a single plateau is bounded by a concrete wall at a more private level relative to the street, adding the pool at its edge minimizing landfill impact.

Gray Villa | White Cube Atelier

The story of this villa was initiated by its location. Passing through beautiful gardens packed with walnut, cherry and apricot trees alongside the river, we were faced with a vast garden next to the mountain with great views to the road and southern plains at the end of the alley.
The commission was to create a distinctive building as a monument in a context exactly located on the city entrance. Formation of the concept was to consider contextual architecture with the least influence on the virgin garden and to seek for close relationship with the natural environment.

Tlalpuente | Pablo Perez Arquitectos Asociados

Tlalpuente project explores the relation of the house with its environment, as it is located in the middle of a forest known as Tlalpuente, in southern Mexico City. It has a 360º view of the surroundings and no neighbours.

Azure Office | Dubbeldam Architecture + Design

Dubbeldam Architecture + Design was commissioned to design the headquarters for Azure Publishing, a leading global architecture and design media brand based in Toronto. The new offices are housed in a former transformer factory located in the Junction Triangle, a historic industrial area in the city’s west end that is undergoing a major transformation as a mixed-use neighbourhood.
Within this emerging creative precinct, Azure has situated itself in 5,600 square feet of space spread over two levels. The entry is demarcated by its distinctive logo, rendered in a bold orange super-graphic, visible through the reception glass on axis at the end of a long corridor leading to the office.

Identiti Advertising Renovation | Meister Varma Architects

Identiti is a mid-size advertising and branding agency run by a father-sons trio who wished to consolidate their home and office in different parts of the city into a spacious live-work unit. By the time we were approached, a building had been purchased for this purpose on a relatively compact site. The existing structure was an archetype of a build-to-rent style prevalent throughout Kerala with low daylight and even lesser character. Cramped room sizes resulting from a half-baked interpretation of Vastu made matters worse.

Concrete Villa | DF_DC

The Concrete Villa is a single house on the Comano hills, a small village north of Lugano in Switzerland. The plot was previously occupied by vineyards and characterised by an elongated trapezoid form, which determines the volume. With the interesting views towards the east and west, but with the constraint of having adjacent houses in close proximity toward the north and south, the house is conceived as in inhabited wall.

Raw & Refine | Aamer Architects

Raw and Refine located in front of a bus-stop at a junction of a minor road and a busy main road, this reconstruction of a small bungalow house is attracting attention from the community for its dynamic form and interesting use of materials.

Built on a tight 170 sqm plot for a family of four Maison Kochi also functions as studio and office in the South Indian city of Kochi. The west facing building is delineated in 2 volumes, the taller south-west block shading the shorter north-east one throughout the day.

The clients’ brief was to create a sustainable modern home that exploited views from the site, which is situated just off the Valley road on the Westcliff ridge and overlooks the jacaranda trees of the Northern suburbs parks and Johannesburg Zoo.

One corner, the garage, is broken off to create an entry courtyard. This house is a place where the residents continue to nurture their land and build strong roots, with a focus on sustainability.

Paliam Veedu | Meister Varma Architects

The brief was to design a home that could host their frequent visits and double up as accommodation for the multitude of classical artists and performers who grace the annual family festival. The design takes a cue from the traditional Kerala architecture around but introduces a gable to contain the building edges. A rainwater channel in polished cement replaces the eaves and helps direct water in a more controlled way for storage.

Even Flow | I-con Architects and Urban Planners

The theatre was designed to have a dynamic form breaking away from the rigid form of their previous theatre. The idea was to create spaces that have minimal enclosures by using challenging materials which are not conventionally audio friendly and yet create the perfect audio-visual experience.

Campanario is a family residence located in a housing development in the city of Querétaro. Having a rectangular site, restrictions by developers had an important impact on the project’s placement which required front and back free space.

The project, which is developed in section, consists of four rectangular horizontal trays of different shape, which allow the successive levels to merge with the horizon, avoiding the appearance of limits or spaces bounded in height.

The plot was a restricted one within a society scheme, encumbered by the existing adjoining buildings along its compound walls on two sides, and two roads along its north and east sides. Hence, there was a need to create privacy, through orientation of the views, screens and courtyards, as well as through landscape design. The little gardens, decks, water bodies, sculpture court, sky lit balconies and terrace gardens were all designed to enhance its spatial feel.

Levi House | Caio Persighini Arquitetura & Design

The Levi house has a striking geometric reading, geometry in which we seek to strengthen the idea of lightness in the most prominent part of the project, the cube. This in turn, houses the rooms and walkways to access them. The issue of lightness is strengthened by its detachment with lateral support and with the materiality worked in the other elements that relate to the house and this relationship occurs throughout the project.

From the beginning of the project we understood the intrinsic qualities associated with this piece of urban fabric. The challenge to customer demands whose programmatic needs far exceeded the possibilities offered by the nature of the terrain. Limited to four workstations divided by only four walls, and conditioned by the small floor area, the premise of creating an interior courtyard became the alma mater of the project, following which we organized the housing, ordered the other spaces vertically upward reaching for air, light, and private visual, finishing it off with a pool deck.

The project faces to provide the house with spaces adapted to its occupant, but with the ability to change over time to adapt to possible family variations. The entire interior partition is demolished and a floor to ceiling furniture is used in which the doors are integrated and which serves to store and give character to the spaces.

The work consists of re-thinking the functioning of the House and apart from adapting it to the 21st century in terms of facilities, it was thought that using the furniture as an architectural element, with functional walls that add versatility that serves to distribute spaces. The materials used are warm, giving prominence to natural oak, which splashes the rooms as a thread of work. It is combined with neutral bottoms that make the wood stand out even more.

The principle that ruled the design conceptualization process was the need to provide the end users with all the utilitarian facets in the compact square footage available.
