About Competition

I am convinced that a good building must be capable of absorbing the traces of human life and taking on a specific richness… I think of the patina of age on materials, of innumerable small scratches on surfaces, of varnish that has grown dull and brittle, and of edges polished by use.

— Peter Zumthor

Archiol has organized this first edition of the Building Material essay competition to understand the various types of building material used in architecture.

“The philosopher believes that the value of his philosophy lies in the whole, in the building: posterity discovers it in the bricks with which he built and which are then often used again for better building: in the fact, that is to say, that building can be destroyed and nonetheless possess value as material.”

— Friedrich Nietzsche

Building materials form an essential part of the field of architecture. The concept of building materials elevates the endurance and visual aspect of architecture design. The relationship between quality and quantity of the building material determines the character of the architecture. The use of correct building material impacts the durability of the structure. Building material affects the vision of the structure as it deals with the appearance – related qualities of the structure.

“People have been doing this for hundreds of thousands of years: using whatever is available to build shelter. If you ponder what could be used, then building materials are everywhere.”

Dan Phillips
