ANZScA
The Architectural Science Association (ASA) is an international organization, the objective of which is to promote architectural science, theory and practice primarily in relation to teaching and research in institutions of higher education.
It has a membership of several thousand professionals, academics and students from many countries. This Association was formerly known as the Australian and New Zealand Architectural Science Association (ANZAScA). ANZAScA was formed on the initiative of Professor Henry (Jack) Cowan, Derrick Kendrick and other architectural science academics to enable them to meet, discuss, and exchange information about their research and teaching. The membership was drawn from architecture schools in Australia and New Zealand, and was open to students and professionals who contributed to the teaching of technical subjects.
Human population is growing at an alarming rate. Even more alarming is the rate at which resources are being consumed to sustain ‘development’ in human societies. In many cases the ‘process of development’ has taken its toll and the ecosystem of built environments, especially urban centers, is affected to such an extent that a reversal is not possible within a lifetime. In such a scenario, it is extremely difficult –nearly impossible to revive or restore these ecosystems and the situation is brought to the question of survival. But wait!!! Whose survival are we truly concerned about? Do we really think nature/ ecosystems are at stake or is it our own existence?
Today, new technologies are being developed to produce as much as we consume –electricity, water, air and so on… But, what goes in to the pursuit and achievement of such a ‘development’ is not recyclable. We know today that we cannot go on like this and what we are doing is eventually threatening our own existence on this planet.
With our own survival in question it is imperative for us, as a community of Built Environment Professionals, to look into the possibilities of developing in a manner such that bare minimum resources are consumed in the process of constructing built environment. In an attempt to minimize resource consumption, it is expected that we come somewhere close to zero if not absolute zero. Doing so gives a resource time of the natural cycle to regenerate itself –be it environmental or any other material resource.
In light of this background, the aim of ASA 2019 shall be to interact and explore in order to evolve more of such technologies, practices and methods that will help the human race in ‘surviving’ the difficult times of ‘development’.
We hope that the papers will present new researches, interesting case studies and implementable and scalable practical solutions. The conference will provide a forum to debate, discuss and deliberate upon choosing a common path for the future in order to give rest to our over exploited resources.
