Ar. Tanya Karim
Tanya Karim is a Partner Architect of the renowned Architectural practice, Tanya Karim N R Khan and Associates (TKNRK). She is also an Educator, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist who obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1990. She taught part time in some Private Universities and has been on the Advisory board at various Interior Design schools.
She was a member of the first executive committee of WAEPA (Women Architects, Engineers & Planners Association) besides being a fellow member of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB), she is also a founding member of an organization CESI (Center for Elderly Support Initiative). She has been practicing Architecture for 28 years and made several Architectural tours in India, Singapore, UAE, Paris, UK, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Bhutan, USA, Oman and Thailand. Besides Architecture, Interior, landscape and Fashion design she is an entrepreneur having been awarded the Daily Star Award for Woman Entrepreneur 2010. She owns a sustainable clothing brand called Urban Bangla and served as a Board member of Bangladesh Women’s Channel of Commerce and Industry (BWCCI). She attended and completed a management course for women entrepreneurs from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Dhaka University, in 1983. Her involvement with academia and dynamic work in the practical field makes her a popular voice at conferences and seminars both at home and abroad.
Dr. Nurur Rahman Khan
Dr. Nurur Rahman Khan is a Partner Architect of the renowned Architectural practice, Tanya Karim N R Khan and Associates (TKNRK). He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1990 receiving the highest honor in design, the “Habibur Rahman Award”. He completed Masters from the same university with the highest grade receiving an award titled the “Ahsanur Rahman Gold Medal”. In 2020, he has obtained PhD from Universita IUAV di Venezia, Venice, Italy. He briefly taught full time in BUET after graduation and later in 1993 he started his own practice TKNRK which soon became an Award-winning prestigious firm both home and abroad.
He lectured widely in many universities around the world such as Yale University, Columbia University, Catholic University of Washington, National College of Arts, National University of Singapore, School of Architecture at La-Defence, Graduate School of Design-Harvard, Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology University, India, Rhode Island School of Design-USA, WCA Pakistan, School of Architecture-Tokyo, BRAC University, North South University, University of Asia Pacific and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. He was the only Bangladeshi juror on the ARCASIA Award. He is a Director of the Muzharul Islam Archives. Apart from this, Mr. Khan has affiliations with many Professional and Academic organizations. He attended numerous seminars, presented papers and publications on various occasions both locally and Internationally. Due to his outstanding contributions to the Architectural arena, he has been honored by many organizations both at home and abroad.
Practice Ideology
Tanya Karim N. R. Khan & Associates emerged as an Architectural firm spearheading contemporary thoughts in Bangladeshi Architecture in the summer of 1991. The partners Tanya Karim and Nurur Rahman Khan set out to form an Architectural practice dedicated to bringing a significant change in the Architectural Arena. Theoretical pretext, search for situated modernity and drawing form cultural and historical references became the trademark of this office.
The design team emerged as a Registered Partnership in 1993 and has continued to provide a vast range of International quality services to a wide-ranging profession, it works more like a design studio where Professionals form Architecture and related disciplines from distinguished institutes, flock together to create Innovative and practical design solutions.
The firm’s Analytical attitude and ability to develop new ideas have given it the reputation to become the Architects of choice for Radical Design. The firm thus, becomes a stepping stone for young upcoming design professionals who wish to develop their minds and engage in Contemporary Architectural Discourse.
