Excerpt: ‘Creative Camp for Artists’ is a Bachelors Design Project by Andreea Bălănici from the “G.M. Cantacuzino” Faculty of Architecture that aims to emphasise the connection between people and nature through the design of interstitial spaces that extend from the outdoors to indoors. The architectural forms complement the natural landscape, while various materials are used to create a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces.

Introduction: The purpose of this academic project is to highlight the close relationship that exists between people and nature through the design of ingenious interstitial spaces that give tourists the impression that the outdoors is being extended indoors. With the use of materials like concrete and wood, the architecture has been subtly incorporated into the landscape. These materials consist of a sequence of identical volumes that harmoniously blend in with the natural landscape, complementing it rather than detracting from it. Each space is intended to offer expansive views of the valley or forest, and abundant glass has been used to create seamless connections between the interior and the exterior. In a gentle and subtle approach, the roof shapes are modelled after the nearby hills’ verticality. The oculus honours this essential bond between humans and nature.

Site Context

Site Location

The site is located in Voroneţ (Romania) and has a distinct character due to its unique architectural context and dense surrounding forests. Because of its location, it is surrounded by a large expanse of verdant landscape, which creates an amazing natural setting. This ensemble stands out for its harmonious blend into the environment, demonstrating a subtle dialogue between human intervention and the beauty of nature.

The site’s seclusion from the main road highlights its unique qualities and gives it an atmosphere of exclusivity and intimacy. Visitors can connect deeply with the history and spirituality of this amazing place due to the immersive experience created by the restricted access.

Site Surroundings

An additional dimension to the architectural design of the site is added by its favourable orientation towards the cardinal points. The Voroneţ site benefits from optimal sun exposure and prevailing wind direction, which leads to favourable climatic conditions and ample natural lighting. These factors ultimately contribute to the site’s sustainability and long-term comfort.

Ground floor, Guesthouse

Careful planning was necessary to ensure that the guesthouse and creative centre blend in harmony and improve each other’s functionality and aesthetics. An effective strategy was to include communal spaces that promote interaction and collaboration between guests and creators.

In addition to serving as a means for circulation, landscaped pathways encourage guests’ exploration and discovery by guiding them through the surrounding natural beauty and connecting various parts of the complex. The overall atmosphere and aesthetic balance of the space are enhanced by carefully planned landscaping features.

Characteristic Section

Through the thoughtful integration of shared amenities and architectural elements, the creative centre and guesthouse can come together to create a harmonious whole that promotes interaction, fosters creativity, and enhances the overall experience for visitors. The guesthouse has a range of amenities that cater to the needs of tourists, including large terraces, a wine cellar, indoor relaxation areas for peaceful evenings by the fireplace, and a platform for stargazing through the “oculus.”

Public meeting areas act as hubs where individuals from the guesthouse and the creative centre can come together, share ideas, and build relationships. These spaces could be cosy lounges, inviting outdoor spaces, or multipurpose rooms furnished with movable furniture that can accommodate a range of uses.

Workshops give visitors the chance to work with resident artists or artisans on hands-on tasks and creative endeavours. These spaces could be equipped with specialised tools and equipment, allowing visitors to develop new skills or create their own artwork under the guidance of proficient mentors.
