Excerpt:Echoes of Replenishment : Breathing New Life into The Padma Bridge Construction Yard through Museums of Expression’ is an architecture thesis by Fahim Ashab Faroquee from the Department of Architecture – Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET) that seeks to repurpose and honor the historical Padma Bridge through adaptive reuse while encouraging sustainable practices. The project aims to educate tourists about the socioeconomic impacts of a bridge, its technical principles, and building techniques, with a focus on sustainability through energy-efficient technologies and renewable materials.

Introduction: The thesis presents prospects for adaptive reuse by conducting a thorough site study and analysing the existing structures and spatial layouts of the Padma Bridge construction yard, Bangladesh. The design concept includes both the Padma River-life Museum, which showcases the natural diversity and cultural legacy of the Padma River, and the Padma Bridge Museum, which showcases the architectural marvel and revolutionary effects of the bridge. The Padma River-life Museum’s galleries, research centres, classrooms, and exhibition spaces provide visitors with an engaging and interactive experience. It seeks to raise awareness of the river’s ecological significance and to support environmental conservation initiatives.

The engineering features of the bridge are the main focus of the Padma Bridge Museum, which has exhibition spaces, multimedia installations, and interactive displays. It aims to educate tourists on the socioeconomic impacts of the bridge on the region as well as its technical principles and building techniques. Sustainability is a key component of the design approach, with a focus on energy-efficient technologies, the use of renewable materials, and the integration of landscape to reduce environmental effects.

The Padma Multipurpose Bridge is both an engineering marvel and a representation of Bangladeshi pride in their country. Stretching over the vast Padma River, it fulfills a long-standing goal of improving connectivity and stimulating economic growth. It serves as a crucial link for trade and transportation, bridging Bangladesh’s geographical divide between its eastern and western regions.

Padma Bridge Project Timeline

The Padma Multipurpose Bridge project was initially conceived in the early 1990s, and after years of design evaluations, feasibility studies, and discussions with local, regional, and global experts, work on the bridge was eventually started in 2011. This studio project’s main goal is to investigate various redesign options for the bridge construction yard located at the Mawa end of the Padma Bridge.

The construction yard underwent a transformation upon the completion of the Padma Bridge project, moving from its function as an operational construction site to a space full of opportunities for adaptive reuse. The 21.4-acre site was deliberately chosen to expedite the building process and guarantee easy access to the construction site. Presently, the 6.01-acre site houses a “Bridge Fabrication Shed” in addition to other establishments.

Changes of Padma River throughout the years

The project intends to convey the captivating tale of the powerful Padma River and the Padma Bridge while simultaneously repurposing the bridge fabrication shed and giving it new life. The dynamic nature of the Padma River and the idea of repurposing the existing shell of the Padma Bridge construction yard served as inspiration for the museum’s concept.

Form Development

The free-flowing shapes of charlands, or riverine islands, created by the river are reflected in the design of the museum galleries. The master plan creates a unified and welcoming environment by integrating the museum complex with the surrounding landscape. With outdoor areas for socialising, leisure, and relaxation, the museum park aims to improve the experience of its visitors.

To ensure effective circulation and visitor management, the site layout incorporates distinct entries for the museum and other functions. A public plaza acts as a centre point and offers a welcoming space for gatherings and activities. The site plan incorporates sufficient parking and service drop-off locations to guarantee accessibility and convenience for guests.

The project gives sustainable design concepts top priority. The form factor and structural components of the existing shed were carefully maintained, retaining their structural integrity. To add more floor areas while maintaining continuity and coherence in the design, a new structural grid layer is applied. The design creates a visually appealing and harmonious experience by skillfully fusing modern architectural elements with the site’s existing industrial character.

By embracing adaptive reuse, the project honours the history of the site and encourages sustainable practices by repurposing existing structures rather than destroying them needlessly. This approach emphasises the interaction between the old and the new and creates a space that honours both the past and the future, giving the museum a distinct and genuine charm.
