Excerpt: ‘Vertical Spa as a landmark’ is an architecture thesis by Ana Vojinović from University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, that explores the design of a vertical spa in order to establish a prospective landmark in the urban core of Belgrade. The project aims to create a unique spa and introduce a new concept while drawing from previous research and experiences. A unique addition to the city’s future urban landscape, the vertical design of this standalone tower adheres to a simple functional logic and programme.
Introduction: A building that aims to become a landmark in the urban core must consider its location, conduct a thorough and comprehensive analysis of its surroundings, show consideration for existing views and silhouettes, and maintain a positive overall impression of the city when determining its height and design. All of these facets are being explored as part of the architecture thesis of the Vertical Spa, a prospective landmark and city symbol situated inside Belgrade, Serbia’s Linear Park, a future public space.
Over time, a generalised picture of a spa centre has emerged, one that either integrates the programme into already-existing facilities or expands it horizontally. However, that concept has left open the question that has guided the entire design process: What would happen if a vertical spa centre housed all of the amenities and programming provided by a horizontal one? One distinctive aspect of the Vertical Spa is stressing the physical separation from the urban setting. Can a single empirical finding sum up all user experiences? At a higher altitude, what kind of emotional and spiritual state would such spaces foster and awaken in the user?
Located in the centre of Belgrade, the selected site has never had much urban planning or development. The region is divided into two distinct sections by a railway line and is characterised by irregular blocks and narrow, uncontrolled streets that lack green spaces or recreational areas. This region has continuously needed commercial, recreational, and public facilities throughout its history.
The first attempt in 1973 resulted in the construction of a sports centre close to the designated area. It wasn’t until 2018 that the original Danube coast plan was formalised through the unrealized Linear Park project. The railway that divides this area of the city will be shifted as part of this initiative, and the traffic area will be transformed into green areas for public use.
There were several steps involved in selecting the ideal location for the Vertical Spa. One of the first was selecting from among the available plots, which is adjacent to the Linear Park. It is split into two sections, though, because of its size, and the final plot shape is formed by lining up the Linear Park plan with the selected plot, which establishes the final plot’s dimensions.
Design Process
Two distinct phases comprise the design process. In the first phase, the history of Belgrade’s spas was researched, the site selected and a small number of best practice examples were analysed, and the organisation and current programmes of well-known spas were studied.
The second phase was devoted to the development of the master project, from conceptualization and preliminary sketches to the in-depth elaboration that resulted in the solution. To find an appropriate solution that fits with the selected location and concept, a 3D model analysis was carried out. After that, the emphasis switched to coordinating functionality, zoning, communication, and space allocation to meet the requirements of the architectural form.
Final Outcome
The site played a major role in the design development from the beginning, influencing the concept and directing its evolution while garnering a great deal of attention in the early stages. An emphasis was placed on transferring the railway’s linear flow into the new Vertical Spa, thereby preserving the place’s identity in a different form, following the railway’s relocation.
A much-awaited urban revitalization in this area of the city is marked by the upcoming Linear Park. It has been observed that this coastal area has a lot of potential and is perfect for adding new amenities after looking into its past.
The new vertical spa will be built there with the intention of improving future amenities and the overall attractiveness and quality of life of the area. Due to the lack of spa facilities in Belgrade, the idea of a vertical spa appears extremely idealistic and has not received enough research, both in Serbia and beyond.
Conclusion: The project led to the creation of a distinctive spa that incorporates a fresh concept while drawing from previous research and experiences. A unique addition to the city’s future urban landscape, the vertical design of this standalone tower adheres to a simple functional logic and programme.
