About Competition
For those who experience vision loss, it can be easy to retreat from the world, to stay indoors and avoid unpredictable surroundings. This is an opportunity to explore your creativity and challenge your design skills to conceive an architectural marvel that will provide a safe, pleasant experience to provide a sensory journey and connect people experiencing vision loss to the dramatic surroundings of the black beaches of Iceland.
Our brief asks for an innovative and creative design focusing on the user experience and connection to the surrounding nature and wildlife with a minimal environmental impact. The partly subterranean structure will give blind and visually impaired people a unique experience with sensory adventures and opportunity to relax and feel at peace. The retreat should be connected to the surroundings through the choice of design and materiality.
Spa and Art facilities will make use of the natural amenities this site has to offer with thermal and glacial waters, ice, black rock and sand. This project will be accompanied by a written description of the journey through your proposal which can be enjoyed by blind and visually impaired people.
