Anton Khmelnitskiy was born in Moscow, Russia (1974) and studied at the Moscow Architectural Institute where he graduated in 1997. He spent his year out in the Netherlands working for Royal Haskoning and MVRDV. In his early career Anton joined Alsop Architects working on a first-class A office building in Moscow called “Millennium House”. In 1999, Anton relocated to their London office and focused on several iconic schemes in London, including Palestra and Victoria House.

Anton joined Foster + Partners as an associate partner in 2005 and was made a partner in 2009. He has overseen several major schemes in Russia, including the proposed reinvention of New Holland Island in St Petersburg from a military facility to a major cultural centre; the restoration and extension of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts; Zaryadye Masterplan and the Red October Development in Moscow; the new HQ for the Russian Copper Company in Ekaterinburg.

He co-founded Architects of Invention in London in 2013 and subsequently opened their Moscow studio in 2015. Over the past several years Anton led a number of projects in Russia and across the world, including award winning Pharmaceutical HQ and Tatlin Apartments in Moscow, Telecom Tower in Santiago, Baden Airpark in Baden-Baden and Hanzas Spire in Riga.

He is currently a principal of AI Studio in London and Moscow. AI Studio was formed in 2018 following the split of Architects of Invention, to continue with its ongoing international projects and staff.

Practice Ideology – AI Studio

AI Studio is an international multi-disciplinary design studio, practicing contemporary architecture, urbanism and interior design. To accommodate a range of projects throughout the world, AI Studio maintains offices in London and Moscow.

Since its inception, AI Studio has completed a number of award winning buildings and has been involved in projects all over the world, including Chile, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Denmark, USA, Seychelles, India, Russia, Czech Republic, France and the UK.

Our approach is summarised by Oscar Niemeyer’s famous quote: “One should always make sure that buildings do not resemble each other. It is the same concept as for art. When one observes and is moved, it is because they see something different. Architecture is invention. All the rest is repetition and of no interest”.
