Practice Ideology

TECTONIC ARTE Arquitectura e Desenho, Lda. was founded in Lisbon in 1994 by João Cassiano Santos, member of the Order since 1986. It is a project company with works in Portugal, Spain and Angola, of a type as diverse as planning, subdivisions, museums, tourist villages, hotels, retail and housing. Since its foundation, this atelier has conceived 171 projects, of which 85 works have been built, with various levels of complexity, developing for each case its own methodology, in locations ranging from Cacela a Velha to the Minas de São Domingos in Mértola, passing by through the Worten retail network in Spain or through social housing in Luanda.  Because the essentials of architecture can only be understood in the work, the first objective of this office is to build well … drawing the boundary between culture and nature, so that each work is based on the Earth, taking responsibility for it, taking care of it for future generations. Because to survive culturally in Aldeia Global you need to have an identity, we define ourselves as Portuguese architects designing at the beginning of the 21st century, the plain expression of contemporary architecture.

Buildings made to last: The financial crisis of the beginning of the third millennium reaffirms the need to make architecture recyclable, whether giving new uses to buildings of the past, or building it in a durable way for new uses in the future. We work daily according to the principles of convertible solidity for the new work (ISCA Aveiro) and flexible use in the renovation work transforming old houses into hotels and museums (Hotel São Domingos and Museu da Ruralidade in Alentejo). Regardless of their size or economic importance, all clients and jobs are treated with rigor, creativity and respect for costs and deadlines. The success of this company depends on the degree of satisfaction and consequent recurrence of its customers, whether they are public institutions, companies or private.
