Samuel was born in Arouca, Portugal, in 1988. He studied at Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto (FAUP) and worked for a year in the chilean studio ELEMENTAL, led by Alejandro Aravena. Samuel is the founder of SUMMARY, an architectural studio created in 2015 in the Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto, Portugal.
SUMMARY is an architectural practice founded by Samuel Gonçalves in 2015. Seeking the balance between pragmatism and experimentalism, this young studio aims for solutions to answer a prominent challenge that the contemporary world places on architecture: how to make construction an increasingly summary process?
SUMMARY is the company responsible for designing the GOMOS building system, for which it was selected as a finalist for the National Creative Industries Award that same year.
The studio’s work has been exhibited in the USA (Society of Boston Architects), Scotland (Edinburgh College of Art), Hungary (as part of the Contemporary Arts Festival), and Germany, this last presentation as part of the official program of the Bauhaus Centenary. SUMMARY was selected as “The Emerging Architect of the Year 2020” by the Dezeen readers.
