[Text as submitted by architect] Bento B has gracefully asserted itself as a beloved and sought-after Japanese culinary haven in Ahmedabad for the past two years. Nestled in the corner of a premium retail and commercial building, overlooking a serene courtyard, the restaurant found itself presented with a unique opportunity for enhancement when its neighbour, a larger restaurant closed its doors in October 2023. This shift marked not only a transition but also an exercise in adaptive reuse, requiring a delicate balance between embracing the existing spatial constraints and introducing novel design elements.

The transformation of this space went beyond mere renovation; it was a thoughtful process of reimagining and repurposing. Elements such as lighting, chairs, and tables from the former occupant were judiciously incorporated, adding a layer of continuity while embracing the challenge of starting afresh. The vision for Bento B was clear—to artfully infuse Japanese cultural nuances without resorting to mimicry.

Stepping into Bento B, one is greeted by the soft glow of shoji panels, setting the tone for an authentic experience. The centrepiece, a Japanese diner-style high table, commands attention, providing patrons with an elevated view of the live sushi counter. Along the periphery, three low-seating nooks offer a tranquil space for savouring ramen, adhering to the traditional Japanese dining aesthetic. The flooring subtly pays homage to tatami mats, grounding the space in authenticity.

Four sets of norens serve both a functional and aesthetic purpose. These not only divide the various dining spaces but also showcase Japanese calligraphy, each word encapsulating the essence of Bento B. From the warm welcome of “irrashai” to the anticipation of “itadakimasu” (let’s eat), the cheerful request for “o kawarii” (more food please), and the whimsical acknowledgment of “tsundoku” (book nerd), each noren communicates the unique spirit of the place.

Beyond its culinary identity, the revamped Bento B has evolved into more than just a restaurant. In collaboration with Crossword, India’s premier bookstore chain, it has seamlessly integrated itself into the world of literature and leisure. The addition of a carefully curated selection of manga comics, Japanese-authored books, anime figurines, and a dedicated reading nook transforms Bento B into a haven for those who seek to embrace the art of slow living.

The new Bento B is not merely a dining space; it is a multifaceted experience that harmoniously merges culinary delights with literary indulgence, creating a haven for enthusiasts of Japanese culture and beyond.
