Excerpt: Pompeii Extension is a residence designed by the architectural firm Barrionuevo Villanueva Arquitectos. The will to add a volume of rooms of antagonistic tectonic material to the existing and outside the very logic of this house of purely neighborhood character seemed wise. And it is here where the commission’s intentions are concentrated, focusing on balancing the full and the empty, the old and the new, the heavy and the light. The light and the dark. The old and the new. A piece appears that begins to give answers to the new needs of character and current material logic.

Project Description

[Text as submitted by Architect] We knew that the exercise’s success would be related to the least possible intervention on what exists. The will to add a volume of rooms of antagonistic tectonic material to the existing and outside the very logic of this house of purely neighborhood character seemed wise.

Intending the formal separation with a strip of glass that proposes the contact or the lack of this between elements, the arrangement of the bars also results in alternating spaces of use. The metal block is arranged transverse to the brick bar covering part of it. It proposes a semi-covered expansion area on the ground floor.

Systemic and orthodox modulation helped us in several orders. On the one hand, optimizing the material gave us compositional order. This is respected for the distribution of loads. The system was solved with vertical structural pipes and joined horizontally at the top and bottom. Giving the system the condition of beam vierendeel. This action solves the structure, material expression, formal resolution, and use. The new rest on the old, giving the whole temporal meaning.
