Excerpt: Glocalism: Reinterpretation of Craftsmanship in A Public Realm’ is an architecture thesis by Mohamed Shameem cp from Wadiyar Centre for Architecture (WCFA), that seeks to explore the potential relationship between architecture and fashion in the realm of urban revitalization. The project addresses the architectural concern of transforming a derelict mill land into a vibrant public realm while embracing ‘glocal’ design principles, sustainability, and community engagement.

Introduction: Within the field of design, fashion and architecture are two prominent disciplines that can influence human expression, creativity, and the built environment. Both fields offer interesting subjects for exploration since they share fundamental elements like form, structure, materials, and aesthetics. The goal of this project is to break down the complex relationship that exists between architecture and fashion, emphasising their commonalities, interplay, and untapped potential.

This architecture thesis aims to repurpose abandoned textile mill land in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, into a vibrant, sustainable public space. The industrial site, once a hub of activity, has been neglected and decayed, highlighting the social and cultural divide within the urban fabric. The project aims to address the numerous issues associated with abandoned industrial areas, such as economic, technological, and urban planning changes, and create a welcoming and sustainable public space that meets community needs.

The project expands on its architectural focus to include the idea of “glocal” design, which aims to create a harmonious blend of local contexts and global influences. Within the realm of fashion, “glocal” design refers to sustainable practices that honour regional customs while incorporating international styles. The project’s architectural concerns become even more complex when ‘glocal’ design principles are incorporated into the architectural intervention, as the goal is to combine Mumbai’s rich local heritage with global fashion influences.

The distinct mill land in Central Mumbai, which spans an impressive 600 acres, has great potential for development. Given its strategic location and generous land area, the central mill land is poised for revitalization. Developers, architects, and city planners are drawn to these abandoned areas to repurpose them as vibrant urban neighbourhoods that balance modern demands with the preservation of the area’s historical characteristics.

The India United Mill No-5 in the Lalbagh precinct zone is the final site chosen after a thorough evaluation due to its advantageous features. The scale of the available sites in the region and the current development projects taking place nearby are taken into consideration when making this decision. This strategic decision optimises the possibility of harmonious and integrated urban design while guaranteeing compatibility with the surrounding built environment.

This project takes a multifaceted approach to addressing architectural concerns, integrating ‘glocal’ fashion, sustainable design, urban revitalization, and community engagement. Firstly, the project is about reclaiming the abandoned mill land and using thoughtful architectural intervention to turn it into a lively public space. The strategy entails repurposing the existing industrial buildings, highlighting their historical significance and adding modern features that improve both aesthetics and functionality.

Secondly, the project incorporates sustainable fashion practices into the revitalised public spaces by utilising ‘glocal’ design principles, promoting responsible consumption and the environmental effects of the fast fashion industry, in addition to showcasing sustainable fashion. Through showcasing the relationship between fashion and architecture, the project promotes discussion about sustainable design and its effects on the urban environment.

The third critical strategy involves community engagement. Acknowledging the value of incorporating locals and stakeholders in the planning and development phase, the project aims to foster a sense of community ownership. Through this engagement, the needs and goals of the people it serves are ensured to be in line with the architectural intervention.

Lastly, the project places a strong emphasis on replication and scalability. The initiative showcases the possibility of wider urban revitalization and sustainable development by serving as a model for similar revitalization efforts in other industrial sites throughout India. This strategy not only helps the Mumbai community at large but also serves as an inspiration for upcoming national initiatives.

Additionally, inclusivity is prioritised in the architectural language. Regardless of age, ability, or background, the design makes sure that everyone can use the revitalised public spaces.  To create a welcoming and comfortable environment for all, universal design principles are applied. The overall goal of promoting a sense of community and belonging within the urban fabric is in line with this inclusivity.
